4 Steps to Spiritual Growth

PrintE-mail

John 8:31-32 'Jesus said to the people who believed in him, 'You are truly my disciples if you keep obeying my teachings. And you will know the truth, and the truth will set you free.'

1. Be sure to read God’s Word daily…‘They continued in the Apostles doctrine’:

Start with the book of John and commit to reading 1-2 chapters a day. Pray that God will give you understanding and you’ll be amazed at what He will show you.

Ask yourself: ‘What changes can I make in my schedule to read the Bible regularly?

2. Be sure to attend church as often as possible. ‘…they continued in fellowship…'

Hebrews 10:24-25 'And let us not neglect our meeting together, as some people do, but encourage and warn each other, especially now that the day of his coming back again is drawing near.'

The word fellowship referred to their close-knit gathering. They had really tight relationships with each other. That happens when we form new friendships with other believers that we meet at a solid Bible teaching evangelical church that is equally committed to follow God.

Ask yourself: ‘How can I commit to a local Bible teaching church?

3. Be sure to partake in the ‘Lord’s Table’. ‘…they continued in the breaking of bread…’

The communion is called the Lord’s Table or ‘breaking bread’. Communion or The Lords Table was first called the Passover. It is taken from the Jewish Passover feast in Exodus 12. When Jesus celebrated the Passover He said that we are to not just remember God delivering His people Israel from the slavery of the ancient Egyptians; but now we are to remember God delivering us from the slavery of our sins, by sending His Son to die for us and that one day He will come back again. It was the new way Jesus told us to remember what He has done and what He will do for us in the future. He is our Passover Lamb that has delivered us from sin and death. The early believers celebrated the ‘Lord’s Table’ often in order to regularly appreciate His amazing love and mercy He has shown us through His death and resurrection.

Ask yourself: ‘When can I regularly partake in the Lord’s Table?

4. Be sure to communicate to God daily in prayer. ‘…they continued in prayer…’

Luke 18:1 'we always ought to pray and not lose heart…'  Prayer is not only talking to God but also listening to what He has to say. Someone once said, 'Prayer is the breath of the soul, without it you will turn blue.' If you don’t spend time communicating with your friend, then soon your relationship will begin to grow distant and fade. It is the same thing with God. So be sure to stay in close contact with Him daily.

Ask yourself: ‘At what time during the day can I spend some time alone with God?

Here are a couple of other important things to do in your newfound relationship with God:

Be obedient to Him (John 14:23): if there is something you read in the Bible that is a command - begin to obey it immediately.

Increasingly trust God (Proverbs 3:5-6) for every detail of your life: He will take care of you and meet all your needs, be patient and wait for Him to answer your prayers.

Most importantly begin to allow the Holy Spirit to empower your daily life and witness: you are not alone in this walk with God. God has given you His Holy Spirit for power to live a godly life and power to speak up and share what Christ has done for you to those in your life.

Be sensitive to the Holy Spirit and He will give you abilities you never had before. 'But you shall receive power (dynamic abilities) when the Holy Spirit has come upon you; and you shall be witnesses to Me in Jerusalem, and in all Judea and Samaria, and to the end of the earth.' Acts 1:8

Finally, we will be praying for you to plug into a Bible believing church near you that you may begin to grow in the grace and knowledge of Jesus. If you need help finding a church in your area contact us and we’ll be glad to offer you guidance.
